Day Center
Monday, July 12th, 2010I was recently at an informational meeting for the “Sleepless in Lexington.” The event is hosted in Applebee’s Park where several youth groups and other organizations will be sponsored in raising funds for homeless awareness in Lexington by starting a Day Center. There are over 2,000 homeless in Lexington. After many non-profits in Lexington accessed the major needs they determined a day center would be a great benefit that would provide 35 resources that aren’t currently being done along with a referral service of what services are already being offered in Lexington. The hope is this day center would be launched in December of 2010 somewhere downtown.
Many of our friends don’t have a place to really hangout during the day besides some of the local parks and the downtown library. The day center would provide constructive time where a life coach would help out each individual. I was so excited to hear this because Embrace has recognized the same need. I’m not about recreating the wheel so we decided to jump on board with these efforts. The hope is to raise $90,000 toward this day center, as we challenged our congregation yesterday about the needs in our community an anonymous person told me they would match our offering yesterday with the hope we would give a percentage toward the day center. The people of Embrace Church stepped up to the challenge and our young church raised $1,039.48! We want to celebrate the generosity of God’s people!
